Teen Beach movie is a very family-friendly Disney musical that teaches kids about individuality, relationships, and gender equality. It has a great blend of comedy, romance, and dancing. I used to watch this movie all the time with my brother when I was younger, I had forgotten how much fun it was to watch. I found myself singing along to all the songs.
This movie is a slight spin-off of the famous movie West Side Story however in this movie it is a surf and turf war between surfers and bikers to have ownership over big mamas.
The music and choreographed dance moves are some of the most entertaining. The choreography is easy enough for kids to learn but hard enough to be fun to watch. The choreographer did a good job of including background dancers in all the songs and not just focusing on the main character. The movie did a good job of ensuring everyone was included and had a story.
A big theme in this movie is getting along with people who are different from you. This is a great message to be teaching kids and I believe the movie did a really good job of putting a comical spin on it.
This movie also does a good job of teaching young views about gender equality by showing them girls can do anything guys can do. There is a song dedicated to gender equality and individuality called Like Me in the song Lela sings “Stretched pants, cute sweater, and sweet perfume.” Mac responds by singing, “Don’t dress for him, it’s better when you dress for you.” Mac is trying to show the girls that you don’t need to change who you are for people to like you. Be yourself and people will love who you are.
