Ski racing is a very under the radar sport in Victor that honestly should be talked about way more than it is. The students who compete in ski racing put a lot of hard work and dedication into their sport in order to perform at such a high, fast pace level as they do. Their ability to ski down an extremely steep hill and still have enough control to fly through the gates is very impressive. I asked one of the ski racers, Luca Syzmanowicz, about his experience with ski racing, how he handles challenges, and some of his biggest accomplishments in the sport.
When asked what inspired him to start ski racing, Luca said “My cousins, i watched them when i was growing up and i’ve always wanted to do it.” Luca also educated me on what kind of events are held during ski races. He said there are 2 different events “Slalom and Giant Slalom.” Slalom consists of smaller skis and smaller “gates” on the hills. Gates are the poles that stick out of the ground, on the hills that the skiers have to glide through. Giant Slalom usually has longer gates and a longer course in general. Luca started ski racing in 9th grade, but his tip to future skiers is to start earlier if possible! Ski racing practices are held at Bristol Mountain as they practice on Mondays and Wednesdays after school, races are every Friday and are usually held at either Bristol, Hunt Hollow or Brantling. Sectionals start February 8th so get ready! |

I really enjoyed this article! Ski racing is definitely such an underrated sport and I didn’t know much about how the races work, the different gates, etc, prior to this article. Great interview too!
