Most people love sports and places where they can show spirit for a team. Some also love giving back to their community. Pittsford’s “Pink the Rink” is a special night where no matter who you are, you can do just that!
On Saturday, February 1st, Pittsford Schools hosted its 15th annual “Pink the Rink” game. This night is overfilled with excitement and spirit, not just because everyone wears pink, but because it’s a chance to celebrate those who have breast cancer and those who have lost their lives to it.
Before walking through the doors of the Tim Horton’s Iceplex, one must purchase a standard ticket for $5. All proceeds go to Benefiting the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester! Upon entering, there are multiple places to grab offerings: “chuck-a-puck,” where one can pay for a certain amount of pucks to throw onto the ice during an intermission where the closest 3 pucks to the center win a prize, a raffle contest, alongside a stand to buy pink t-shirts.
As you continue your journey through the massive main rink where the event is held (they have three others), you’ll find that everyone is dressed in pink (usually)- even the players!
Both our JV and Varsity teams competed against Pittsford in their fresh new attire- the Pittsford Panthers wearing all-pink jerseys featuring a ribbon around their paw logo and the Blue Devils in their navy blue jerseys with pink filling in the white spaces.
The Panthers have something special, though- on the back of their jerseys above their numbers are a series of letters that represent people they know with breast cancer and those who have survived it, as well as signs posted at front doors.
Since its inception in 2010, Pink the Rink has raised over $105,000. This evening was an interesting and noteworthy event that both embodied an exciting climate and rallied the community together, with both teams putting on a show in honor of the foundation of the night.
