Anthony Edwards is already rolling in the playoffs and we are just getting started with round two. Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves are set to face Stephen Curry the Golden State Warriors in Round 2. After knocking out Durant and the Phoenix Suns in last year’s postseason, to now knocking LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers out in this year’s playoffs. Edwards is looking to end another all time greats season, this being Steph Curry.
With all of those fantastic accomplishments for what some call Ant-Man’s young career, there’s another storyline that’s a little more heartfelt. In January of this year, Edwards met a young fan of his, 6 year old Luca. Luca is going through a battle with leukemia. Edwards met the fan after the game, where Luca gifted him an orange wristband with his favorite number on it, number 5. Edwards, who wears the number 5 on his jersey says he loved the wristband and made a very touching promise to the boy, vowing to wear the wristband for the rest of his career.
So far Edwards is off to a brilliant start to his playoff run. Edwards in round 1 against the Lakers averaged nearly 30 points, 8 boards and 6 assists. In a series where they weren’t given a chance by many, only added more fuel to the fire. When the Lakers traded for Luka Doncic earlier in the season, who many argue is a top 3 player in the league, everyone thought they would be unstoppable and bring home another championship to the City of Angels. Well thanks to Edwards and the Wolves, The Lakers were sent packing in just 5 games. There were a bunch of contributions from the whole team, but Edwards led the way in the Round 1 win.
Edwards met young Luca after a loss to the Detroit Pistons. Despite the loss, Edwards still made time for young Luca to have a wish granted. Luca had a sign at the game that he showed Edwards, reading “ To Do #1 Beat Cancer #2 Become the next MJ.” Edwards told Luca he loved the sign, Edwards signed Lucas poster and jersey as well. Luca then gifted Edwards the Wristband, Orange and reading number 5 on it. Edwards then told Luca thank you and made a promise that just for him he will wear the wristband as long as he is playing in the NBA. Luca, battling leukemia, was very joyful that Edwards told him this. Edwards then took Luca into Minnesota’s locker room and had Luca meet his teammates. Luca gifted Donte DiVincenzo, Naz Reid and Mike Conley wristbands as well.
Many might think, “Yeah, these athletes will tell them these things just to be kind and give the kid a good experience, but they don’t hold to their end of these promises.” Well if you have that mindset, Anthony Edwards is not like those athletes who do that. In Game 4 of the 2025 First Round, LeBron James made a diving play at the ball, and accidentally smacked Anthony Edwards wrist and snapped the wristband in the process. Edwards had it repaired and as soon as it was put back on in the same game. Edwards was going to let the broken wristband stop him from honoring his vow to the fan. With all the electric dunks and moments he has in these playoffs, this quiet act spoke just as loudly as those moments.
This story is truly touching. It shows the human side of these athletes and they aren’t all these money hungry, selfish divas many people stereotype them as. Edwards gives many fans a true bright spot that fans can see and be joyful about. This should inspire athletes to be a role model, not only as a player, but a human being as well.
