1978 – – > 2023 Boys Basketball Section V Champs!

Caleb Rickey, Sports Editor

Saturday, March 4th was the game of a lifetime for the Victor Varsity Boys Basketball team. If they won it would be their first sectional title since 1978, the first title in 45 years. It was the Section V AA championship game the winner would go on to compete in regionals and have a chance at the state title.

The top-seeded Victor (20-2) played against the 6th-seeded Fairport (14-2) a team they had previously beaten twice but it didn’t matter going into the game. Fortunately, Victor came in well-prepared as Monroe County Division I Coach of the Year Coach Roberts had game planned for this team twice and knew what he was going into.

The game was held at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester NY where all the Section V championship games were hosted. Victor had the last game Saturday, slated to start at 9 PM. As soon as you walked into the arena to find your seat if you were a parent or a student joining the huge student sections showing out from both Victor and Fairport you could feel the intensity settle in as the previous game wrapped up and both teams took the court.

The game started shortly after 9 PM and instantly both student sections were sounding off chants from everywhere and everyone was ready for tip-off. The game started with a dominating first quarter from Victor only letting up a total of 5 points all coming from free throws. The score stood at 17-5.

Victor kept up the domination as they outscored Fairport in the second quarter with 12 points for Victor and 9 points for Fairport. Going into half the Blue Devils were up big 29-14. The boys went into half feeling confident but as they all know “all gas no breaks.”

The second half kicked off with Fairport mounting a comeback coming within 5 points and you could feel the momentum shifting in their direction until… AJ and Garrett both knocked down three-pointers going back up to double digits and silencing the roaring Fairport student section. Victor was up 46-36.

The 4th and final quarter of the game consisted of Fairport trying to play catchup but unfortunately for them whatever they were able to do Victor hit them back. All Victor had to do was continue to lock down the perimeter and respond on the offensive side of the ball and they would be champs. With no doubt, Victor put up 20 in the final quarter and was able to bring home the brick-winning 66-54. The Victor Boys Varsity Basketball Team was your Section V AA Champions.

The team swarms the court dogpiling in the middle of the court celebrating and making history and living their dreams. After the celebrations were over it was time for the award ceremony.

Senior Brennan Hopkins won the Sportsmanship Award and Junior Nick Leonard earned the Most Valuable Player through the AA tournament. Junior Garrett Clar, Sophomore Griffin Hopkins, and Senior Ryan Dodge all received All-Tournament Team awards. Coach Roberts is the winner of the Bill Farrell Memorial Championship Coach’s Award.

The day after, Junior Garrett Clar was declared Monroe County Division I Player of the Year along with Coach Roberts winning Monroe County Division I Coach of the Year. Garrett and Nick both made the Monroe County Division first team and both Cam Ryan and Griffin Hopkins are on the Monroe Country Division I second team.

The season is not over yet as the boys move past sectionals and will move onto regionals where they will play the Section VI champions Niagara Falls this Saturday at Rush Henrietta at 7:30 PM.
