Jack West is a name that almost everyone from Victor knows. From his original work to his covers, including “Don’t you Forget About Me”, originally by Simple Minds, was filmed and produced right here on campus. The music video included students and locations from the school, as well as a very noticeable charm that only being at Victor could produce. But now, Jack has moved beyond Victor, and the future is looking bright for this promising new artist.
He got his start at age 12, and ever since he’s been working with the likes of Eddie Vetter of Pearl Jam, and other members of the band. He’s toured around the country and abroad, and has made a name for himself internationally.
Many students who are still at victor and around the local area, are curious about what’s going on with him right now. So we reached out to ask a few questions about how things are going, and an insight into his creative process.
Firstly, we asked how 2023 went. West described his experience as “an incredible year faced with the most amazing times of my life and the worst times of my life.” He went on to describe his experience going on tour in Europe this year, as well as becoming a model for Gucci and Prada.
We also asked about his goals for 2024.. He said that “I’d like to go to Japan in May.. but music-wise I’m hoping to land some sync deals, and go on tour in Europe again! Sync deals are basically getting your music in movies, or TV shows or commercials.” He also added that he loves traveling, and it’s one of his favorite things to do.
In addition to this, when asked about his favorite part of what he does, he added “Definitely traveling and meeting new people. Very fortunate that music and travel goes hand in hand. All my problems and worries go away when I’m on the move … it’s the best feeling in the world.”
What people were most curious about, was his creative process, and getting a better understanding of his songwriting process. “..I’m always inspired by other people’s song and stories. when it comes to recording and writing my own music, I usually start with the music whether it’s being written on guitar or piano . Sometimes the lyrics come pretty naturally and sometimes it takes months to finish writing a song. It all depends..”
Finally, we asked if he had any advice for former classmates, or for people who are aspiring to also pursue music. He replied with “..Don’t let anyone tell you what to wear, what to sing, how to act. Just be yourself! Whether others around you like or not. Become that person that everyone looks at and talks about it. Don’t worry about others perception of you … AND always work on growing and perfecting your craft. That’s the only way to progress in the music industry.”
The experience talking to West was very pleasant and an insightful one. On behalf of everyone at the Victor Voice, we wish him the best of luck in the future on his endeavors, and furthering of his musical career.
