Some of the most creative kids in victor, the AP art students. But what is AP art, how do you get tested on how well you do art if it’s so subjective? What makes a good art piece? How do you figure out what you are going to draw? Although i’m not one to talk, I can barley draw a star, I know that art, a beautiful way to express emotion, is one of the most amazing talents someone can share with the world (or the art hallway).
AP Art can be a 2 or 1 year course. Mr. Denner, our AP Art teacher, believes and realizes it is very hard to create a portfolio in one year. The 1st year is more of an independent study to gain more knowledge and add growth to your portfolio which is one of the objectives, seeing growth over time.
Art is subjective, which can be hard for grading, but the rubric takes out the subjective and keeps the objective of what their art is portraying and the techniques they are using. Meredith Hogan, a Junior working on her first year of AP art is gaining techniques she can add to her portfolio, using skills like lighting and depth. Meredith enjoys coming to class to relax and listen to music as art is a more relaxing class than her other more stressful classes.
Stephanie Haas, a very successful artist, shows subjectivity in art through her teachers, “each teacher has a different art style themselves, as well as a different way of teaching art.” Though all artists have different styles and ways of teaching, Stephanie has learned from each
of them and added all of their styles to her art toolbox and are able to add them to her portfolio.
Not all art students plan their life around doing art forever, but Stephanie has already been accepted into 5 art schools and plans to continue showing her art. In Stephanies AP portfolio that will be graded she is “naturally more drawn to create art using nature as well as portraits.” No student will ever draw the exact same picture, so its super cool to know that art can come in so many different themes, meanings, shapes, sizes, ect..
Not only is the art victor students share in the art hallway, but at many showcases. Stephanie was lucky enough to go to one with Mrs. Sarneckis the Junior high art teacher. They collaborated on a piece of work to share with many other students and their teachers at Nazareth College. Getting opportunities like this from one class and talent is amazing!!
If you are lucky enough to be gifted with artistic talents, I am forever jealous. Walking through the art hall there are so many different meanings and abilities displayed and its so cool to see progression. Especially seeing kids who may not be the greatest artists doing somethingaround the school and getting involved. Victor offers many classes, but in my opinion Art, specifically AP art is the coolest.
