Imagine being murdered by your boyfriend who you loved and trusted. Well that’s what happened to Brooke Sullivan in the book Inmate by Freida McFadden, or what she thought happened when she testified against him 10 years ago sentencing him to life in prison. And now imagine you have a kid with the man you thought killed you that no one from your hometown knows about since you fled. Well now Brooke is back in the house she grew up in while working at the max security prison that Shane (the bf killer) is spending his years in.
Brooke thinks maybe she can avoid Shane, until he comes in with an open gash on his forehead when all the sudden he starts claiming he wasn’t the killer. Why does Brooke feel safe around him? She has had nightmares about this exact moment, why isn’t she scared? And why is Shane being so nice and understanding to her? Maybe he isn’t the killer after all… Maybe she put the wrong guy in jail. And why all the sudden is her best friend from her childhood Tim back and trying to date her.
The Inmate takes you through many thrilling plot twists, while manipulating you into changing your mind endless times and shows you to trust your gut…or don’t?
This story felt like not only the author, but also the characters were manipulating me the entire time. The end will leave you shocked and questioning the whole book. Read to find out if Shane is actually the killer, and if Brooke maybe was right all along.
Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD
The night of the murder, which the book travels back to in some chapters as the truth unravels, there were 3 guys and 3 girls. Only 3 made it out alive, Tim , Brooke, and Shane. Shane was found knocked out while Tim was found stabbed in the stomach. Brooke thought it was Shane because of the smell of his aftershave and how his body felt while he was over her choking her with her necklace that Tim gave her. But years later, why is Tim giving her the exact necklace again…
Tim feels suspicious throughout the whole book as he is portrayed as the “nice” guy so you start to think it’s not true. Little do you know Shane may actually be the bad guy and Tim is actually the good guy.
Was Shane really the one who did it and just manipulated us the whole time? Was Tim right growing up warning Brooke about what he’s capable of? Is Margie the babysitter who we think she is? Why is she so involved in Brooke’s son’s life? Who actually killed Brooke’s parents? And were Shane’s parents really not home the night of the murder?
Read inmates to discover more plot twists and deaths that occur throughout the book, because I’ll tell you it’s not what you think…
