Teacher, Victor Alum, Coach, Class Advisor and former Ski Instructor are all titles that describe Mr.Carey. Mr. Carey is a beloved teacher here at Victor High School and was once a beloved student.
He represents a positive figure in our school and is involved in some of the things that make our school great.
So let’s start at the beginning.
Mr. Carey is a Victor alumnus graduating in 1988 after transferring from McQuaid his sophomore year. He talked highly of highschool and the great memories from being on the soccer team, track and field, wrestling, alpine skiing and also meeting his wife!
Being an alumnus at Victor and given the opportunity to come back to teach here, Mr. Carey was able to teach alongside some of his favorite teachers and mentors.
I believe this to be one of the reasons he is such a great teacher because he cares about this school and is invested in the students’ own journeys through Victor.
Mr. Carey has been teaching here for 25 years, though growing up, he said, “teaching was the furthest thing from [his] mind.”
Like most he was eager to get out of his hometown and see the world. He attended college at St. Bonaventure University studying law and was a ski instructor out west before finding his way back to Victor High School as a English and Leadership teacher.
Throughout the years Mr. Carey has had a lasting impact on our school.
For example, Mr. Carey alongside Brian Ferguson developed what is now called Senior Connection. He talked about how he wanted to find a way for seniors to connect with their fellow classmates before coming into an exciting senior year together. It’s an event for seniors to participate in field day-like activities while interacting with some of their classmates.
Another way Mr. Carey has impacted our school is through his teaching and coaching.
He was a Boys Soccer Coach, coaching all the way from modified through Assistant Varsity and a current JV Assistant Coach. In addition to that, he was a track coach for 15 years and coached alpine skiing for 5 years.
Mr. Carey has made lasting impacts in many athletics lives as he is a positive role model and extremely passionate in what he does.
Mr. Carey is not only a passionate coach but a passionate teacher.
He teaches English 12 and a Leadership elective course. One of the things I admire about Mr. Carey as a teacher is the way he cares about his students.
Mr. Carey learns from the students he teaches. He told me, “teaching keeps you evergreen” meaning his students keep him young.
He talked about how teaching has taught him various lessons of compassion and to teach with purpose and meaning.
Every day walking into Mr.Carey’s classroom I feel a sense of excitement knowing I am going to learn something new.
He is a very involved teacher and interested in each one of his students.
His classroom creates a culture that makes it exciting to learn and leaves you with new insite everyday.
One of the lessons Mr. Carey has taught me is, to be present in life and how I can change the world because it’s my world.
He is an impactful teacher in our school and a positive role model for many. Mr. Carey is a person you want to know.
