The Compound is a must-read. It is a story that requires a slightly higher reading comprehension level than the average middle schooler, so I would recommend it to anyone in high school and above if they don’t enjoy reading, like me.
This is the first book in a 2 book series by S.A Bodeen that totals up to 571 pages. In The Compound and The Fallout, the second book in the series, S.A. Bodeen develops the characters throughout the story. Hence, as you progress toward the end, it’s as if you are creating a relationship with the characters.
The beginning gets you hooked right off the bat. Once you get toward the middle of the story, you could get bored but I encourage you to stick through it, I promise you that it’s worth it in the end.
Also, some parts of these books may be found disturbing to readers so take this as a warning!
Picture this. You’re 9 years old and you’re one of four children of a billionaire. You have an older and a younger sister, the best chocolate lab in the world, Cocoa, as well as your built-in best friend Eddy, your twin brother. You grow up in a mansion in Seattle, spoiled with the world’s best technology.
This is the story of Eli Yanakakis. He didn’t imagine this wonderful life. The Compound is a dystopian survival story where we can experience what it’s like to live in a fallout shelter through a nuclear war. This story is told through Eli, as mentioned above, and what he has seen and experienced in his time surviving in his family’s fallout shelter.
Eli’s dad, Rex Yanakakis, is the founder and boss of the number one technology company, in our lives, Apple. So Eli has it all right? You’d be wrong if you assumed that. Unfortunately, the Yanakakis family lives in a target area for nuclear war. This means that if a nuclear weapon was launched they had 40 minutes until you would be killed.
Eli’s dad is always in constant fear of a nuclear war happening, and just like any rational person he built a top-of-the-line nuclear shelter, called the Compound. Fortunately, the Compound wasn’t a huge waste of money and it would be put to use.
Eli and his Family enter the Compound unknowing of who made it in. The door closes. No one can enter. No one can leave. For the next 15 years, the door is locked. This is not good news for Eli and the rest of the Yanakakis’. Eli’s Grandma, Cocoa, and Eddy didn’t make it. Eli will not only have to spend the next 15 years underground, in a nuclear shelter, but he will never see his brother ever again. Or will he?
