Though made in the 90’s, a favorite to many, 10 Things I Hate About You is a timeless coming of age movie.
This film was produced in the late 1990’s and was produced by Jeffrey Chernov and Andrew Lazar. It also stars Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. This film helped to boost both their careers in different ways, especially Heath ledger.
It covers the stereotypical high school experience and students’ complicated dating lives with romance and humor. Though made years ago, it is still relatable and memorable to many. They don’t make romcoms quite like this anymore.
The film was also loosely inspired by William Shakespeare’s play, The Taming of the Shrew. It isn’t an exact reenactment of the play, but was still woven into the plot.
Many scenes from the play are still popular today. One being Heath Ledger’s performance of the song, “Can’t Take My Eyes off You” by Frankie Valli. Another was Julia Stiles’ scene reciting the poem she made for her English class. This scene was also where the name of the film came from, since it was the ten things she hates about Heath Ledger’s character.
Julia Stiles was such a strong character in this film as well. Her untamable character and feminist ideal mixed with Heath Ledger’s charming bad boy facade created a chemistry like no other.
I really enjoyed the witty dialogue and humor in this. This movie is so nostalgic in so many ways and is such a staple. If you are looking for a coming of age movie, I highly recommend watching this movie.
