Have you heard about the new global 10 teacher? Her name is Ms. Kelley! You might know her as she was a long term sub last year, teaching 4 sections of Government and one section of Global 9. This year, she is back as a full time teacher, teaching Global 10.
“My role has been similar. The only difference is I’m hired full time. It’s not too different from last year. I’ve just changed grade levels.”
She went to school locally and graduated from St. Bonaventure. She previously student taught 9th grade at Olean school district. She taught 9th-12th grade at Salamanca on the Reservation down in the Southern Tier, and worked in Brighton for a little bit before coming to Victor.
When I asked Ms. Kelley if she ever thought she’d be working so close to where she grew up, her response was, “That was always my goal, I never wanted to move away from Rochester. My entire family is here and my son’s entire family is here so it just makes sense.”
Ms. Kelley knew she wanted to teach history because of her 11th grade APUSH teacher who was passionate about the course and gave life lessons in addition to social studies lessons, “I really liked that and aspired to be like that as I continue to grow as an educator.”
She says she enjoys getting to interact with students and teach them why social studies is important. Ms. Kelley strives to inform her students how we are all connected and how events in the past can help us solve on-going and future problems.
Ms. Kelleys main goal for her students is for them to pass the Regents exam in June. This is something she is sure to include in each class to make her students aware of why we have to do the dreaded essays and multiple choice questions each unit.
She was a cheerleader during highschool and college, but due to COVID her cheerleading “career” was cut short and she picked up running which she enjoys doing along with baking and going to the movies.
I have only known Ms. Kelley for a couple months but in this short amount of time I can tell that she is someone who cares for others and always wants the best for her students.
