If you know Mr. Caughlin, you have most likely had him for English 9 honors or journalism. Or, you have heard about him from friends or other students that had him. Either way, he is a well known teacher that has various unique ways of teaching and impacting students lives through the classroom.
When he first started his career as a teacher, he taught English 9 regents and 11 regents. He taught 11 regents for 5 or 6 years, and in his second year of teaching he took on teaching Journalism and English 9 honors. He has been teaching here in Victor for 9 years.
Teaching English 9 honors and Journalism are two very different courses with different requirements from the students, personally having taken both of them. Mr. Caughlin teaches both courses and enjoys teaching 9H more because it is more suited to his background, skillset, and long term vision as a teacher. On the other hand, journalism can be exciting and invigorating but it often leaves him feeling more drained than 9H does.
If you have had Mr. Caughlin as a teacher, you get used to his daily meditations before class. He has been meditating since he was 7 and believes it is a great way to reset and take a break, as he is naturally an intense person.
Another unique thing Mr. Caughlin does as an English teacher that creates such great conversations in the classroom are his “Philosophy Fridays”. He loved the big questions in philosophy and enjoyed reading books that have been around for a long time. He took philosophy in college, but did not end up pursuing a philosophy minor, although he thought about it.
He is very involved in Victor as he has also taken part in many clubs. He has been part of the Quidditch club, is currently the stage tech and acting coach for the theater department, and also ran the yearbook club for 2 years in the past. He was also a class advisor for the class of 2020.
Mr. Caughlin is very passionate about his family, and describes that he has a very “love filled house”. He has two young sons, Sean and Thomas, and a wife, Megan. His house is full of fun and imagination and his family listens to and plays music together, and reads books. He states, “The whole reason to work is so that you get to go home”.
Life for Mr. Caughlin is far more than just work and school.
Lastly, as it is hard for him to choose, one piece of advice Mr. Caughlin would give to students in high school that broadly high school is a chance to be silly and a kid still. He believes that most students feel a pressure to grow up super fast, commit to a college or future, or to even not do the theme days. Overall, he thinks students try to be older than they are and he loves watching students learn and become themselves and the best way they do that is by being fun and silly.
