A familiar face to many around the school is Mr. Roberts. Roberts has a lot on his plate every school year and even when on summer vacation.
Of course, he is one of the teachers that teaches history at Victor, but also he coaches the Boys Varsity Basketball team in the winter season of high school sports here at Victor.
He also runs the basketball OTA’s during the offseason, which stands for Organized Team Activities. These are workouts that just help the basketball players at Victor stay ready for the next season ahead.
There are correlations for Mr Roberts between Coaching and Teaching. He says that “The mentality of improving as opposed to being perfect is something that I’ve taken from the basketball court to the classroom.”
He says he also implements his “Next Play” saying in the classroom as well. Whether his students struggle on a test or miss a homework assignment, there is always room for improvement and just make up for the next one.
Mr Roberts also is a huge pro sports fan as well. You can catch him mostly rooting on the New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills. Last year he had his first year teaching the new elective “History of Sports” which he believes is more student driven than other classes he teaches.
I asked if in the future he would consider teaching any other new electives and he believes that a History class relating to food would be a very fun class for him and students to learn.
