5 Must Read Mysteries to Read This Summer

Doyle Ierlan, Staff Writer

Summer is coming up and one of the best times to read is at a beach. One of the best beach read genres is mystery.  The following books are among the best mystery books I have personally read, although the books are not all traditional mystery books they still fit that category.

The first must read of May is the book Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. The book is about a young teen named Stevie Bell investigating the murder and kidnaping of Albert Ellingham’s wife and daughter at the famous private school Ellinham Acadmy, as she also discovers the hidden secrets and mysteriesof Ellingham Acadmy. This book was well written and brings a slight bit of humor to lighten the mood.

Another great mystery book to read is The Project by Courteney Summers. The Project is from the perspective of two sisters Lo and Bea. The story is about the two sister’s time and experience with a cult called The Unity Project. The mystery part is Lo is trying to solve the mystery of what happened to her sister Bea. Overall the book is dark, moving, and riveting.

A book filled to the brim with mysteries, riddles, and puzzles is the The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. The book is about a girl named Avery who is living in her car after her mothers death and mysteriously inherits the majority of Tobias Hawthorne assets. This book is well written and is an amazing read for everyone that enjoys puzzles.

A non-traditional mystery is the book called 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. This book is about the suicide of a girl named Hannah and her tapes telling us the 13 reasons why she committed suicide. The point of view is from a boy namedClay and the mystery of this book is: why is Clay in the tapes? This book is heartbreaking, gripping, and altering.

The final mystery book of May is the book One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. The book is a mix of the Breakfast club mixed with an Agatha Christie novel. The story is told from four different perspectives. There is Addy the beauty, Copper the jock, Nate the criminal, and Bronwyn the brain. They all are in detention with Simon the outcast when he is killed and the mystery is simple: who killed Simon?
