Are We Really “Happier Than Ever”?

After 2 long-awaited years, Billie Eilish debuted her second album, Happier Than Ever. After her previous album release, When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go in March of 2019, with hits such as “bad guy” and “bury a friend”, many listeners awaited to see what Eilish would release next. On July 30th, 2021 she delivered her fans exactly what they wanted.

Within 2 weeks, the album reached #11 on Billboard’s Top 100 and stayed on the charts for 26 weeks after that. For Eilish, this was no surprise but for fans, however, this was an incredible victory.

The first track, Getting Older, is what fans see as Eilish’s growth as a pop star throughout her fast-paced fame. As a dedicated avocado (fan), I view the story told differently than most. I personally view Getting Older as the dark and untold side of Billie’s rise to fame.

Happier Than Ever, the 15th track, is the most popular song off of Eilish’s album, generating 240 million views on Youtube, just in the past year. For many fans, this song relates to different situations in their personal lives, but some fans believe that this song describes Eilish’s toxic relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Brandon “Q” Adams. In her documentary, The World’s A Little Blurry, she explains her relationship with the artist: “I just wasn’t happy. And I didn’t want the same things he wanted and I don’t think that’s fair, for him. I don’t think you should be in a relationship, super excited about certain things that the other person couldn’t care less about”.

The 12th track of the album, Your Power is a plea to others to not abuse the power they have in a relationship. The lyrics talk about how when in a toxic relationship, at the start, young girls don’t usually realize what a horrible relationship they’re in until it’s too late. It also describes the manipulative and controlling relationships people may be in.

The 16th and final track, Male Fantasy, connects to many on such a personal level. After the music video aired, people got to really see how and what Eilish was feeling during this heart-wrenching song. The video fully described the feeling of being in a constant never-ending depressive cycle. Eilish states that the meaning of Male Fantasy comes from the feeling of falling for someone who doesn’t want you back.

No matter what track you’re on, Happier Than Ever will always manage to make you feel very emotional and the connection with the album will be life-changing. Overall YES, fans are happier than ever!
