Kaleidoscope: How am I supposed to watch this?

Caleb Rickey, Sports Editor

Netflix’s latest show Kaleidoscope adds color to what some may call a basic heist story. There are thousands of ways to watch this new hit show so how should you watch it yourself? Well based on my experience watching it in the way Netflix provides it to you.

Via Netflix

You may be confused. What do you mean by “how Netflix provides it to you?”
Don’t they show everyone the show in the same way as every other show? Well not with Kaleidoscope; Netflix changes the game up a bit by randomizing the episode order for you with it always ending with the episode titled ¨White¨.

All the episodes are named colors and the events of the story take place over a 25-year period piecing together the timeline comes with your own viewing experience.

The chronological order of events is:

Violet – 24 years before the heist

Green – 7 years before the heist

Yellow –  6 weeks before the heist

Orange – 3 weeks before the heist

Blue – 5 days before the heist

Red – The Morning after the Heist

Pink – 6 Months after the heist

White – The day of the heist

If it was truly chronological White would go in between Blue and Red but the only rule when watching the show is to watch White last.

Going into the show I was considering going through the chronological order which basically ruins the experience and makes it like every other show. Netflix gave me the order of Green, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Violet, Red, Pink, and White. I loved my order and thought it fit well together and from reading other reviews I’m looking forward to watching the show again as everyone seems to be satisfied with what their order was.

Stepping away from the crazy spectacle of how you can watch the show let’s look at a few things that make the show what it is.

Via Netflix

For one the cast gave the audience outstanding performances with the likes of well-known actor Giancarlo Esposito known for his roles in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul delivering a very strong performance of the mastermind of the heist as a revenge-driven man named Leo Pap who is hung up on his past. Another standout actress Tati Gabrielle is known for her roles in You and Uncharted she plays the role of his daughter who works for the target Leo Pap.

Rosaline Elbay, Paz Vega, Peter Mark Kendall, and Jai Courtney all played the roles of the rest of the crew and each of them shined bright in their respective roles.

If you want to go in blind about the story I suggest you stop here as I am going to go into the plot and what really is going on in each episode. I can only tell you from my experience and how my viewing experience went. For mine, it opened with the episode titled Green.

Green opened with the main antagonist behind bars and was shortly introduced to another main character his cellmate. Green was 7 years before the heist so you figure out how he gets out of jail.

Yellow is 6 weeks before the raid you see the beginning stage of prep where you meet all the crew.

Then it was Violet 24 years before the heist where we learn how Leo Pap got behind bars and what is the reason for his revenge towards his once former partner.

Red and Pink go together as they both occur after the heist and talking too much about these episodes could ruin your experience if you don’t begin with these episodes.

With White well simply can’t give anything away as it is the final piece to the puzzle and what really pieces everything together

No matter how you view this show you’re bound to have a new experience and I can see more shows being made like this as it adds a spark to a basic plot that hundreds of shows tackle.
