If you were not aware, over the weekend the annual Victor pentathlon and steeplechase meet took place with athletes from around section five coming to Victor to try their hand at these track events. For background, steeplechase is a 3000m event where runners jump over 4 large track barriers and 1 large water barrier, it is renowned as one of the hardest events in track and field.
This meet in particular saw 2 veteran steeple runners and 2 new steeple runners on the boys side, the conditions were far from ideal being cold and windy out which only added to the challenge of the steeple race.
After the race I spoke with sophomore distance and first time steeple runner Garret Fahy and he described the event as “One of the most difficult things I have ever done in my life, but I’m glad I tried it.”
Overall, the boys weren’t thrilled with the results but we’re happy they were able to perform given the harsh conditions.
On to pentathlon which is a combination of track and field events which shows a true test of overall athleticism by making athletes compete in the 1500m, 110 Hurdles, Shot put, Hugh Jump and Long Jump and whoever gets the highest point total wins.
This event was a huge success for the boys with sophomore runner Jack Kubinski winning the meet and junior runner Nick Rine taking a solid 4th place.
I spoke with Nick before the race and he said, “It’s my first time trying Pentathlon and I’m looking forward to competing in some of the events for the first time.”
As a viewer it was very interesting to see these track events I barely knew anything about for the first time and it was, in total, a successful day for the boys team.
