Mr. Hunkovic is a coach, a teacher and a big believer in hard work. Teaching AP students in social studies as well as coaching XC athletes, some of the hardest things to teach Hunkovic has proved time and time again his liking for teaching as well as coaching.I sat down with Hunkovic to get his view on teaching but more where his love of Cross Country and track sourced from, as well as his transfer from Victor Track and Field to College Track and field as the University of Rochester mid distance coach. As quoted by Mr.Donroe a retired Victor track coach as well as a former teammate of Hunkovic “Dedicated is one of the best words I can find to describe Mr. Hunkovic. For his students and athletes, Hunkovic spends an incredible amount of time personalizing materials, lessons, and practice plans to make sure everyone has the same opportunity to succeed if they put the work in.” Hunkovic expressed a love for running since he was in middle school. As a lost kid he needed a guide and he credits his Social studies teacher for helping him really get into running and teaching. “It completely changed the trajectory of my life, it taught me a work ethic that has brought me to places, Team championships, being a teacher in Victor, being a coach Victor and now having the chance to coach at the collegiate level that I never would have had, had it not been for being a student Athlete ”. Hunkovic now tries to pass on those lessons through coaching everyday, with tons of hardships, a lot of hard work and a good attitude towards coaching and his athletes.
He applies his college running and highschool experience of running to Victor by making each person on the team welcome in many ways, as quoted “VXC is a family”. Which then relates to Hunkovics decision to stay with Victor XC and leave the track program, he was asked to coach both XC and track at the U of R but he said his dealbreaker was leaving VXC which shows the real care he has for the Victor XC program.
Recently Hunkovic has been leading the cross country team to now multiple first place finishes on the girls side even with injury and sickness he manages to lead them still to those top place finishes. Speaking from a current VXC runner Hunkovic genuinely loves and cares for the sport, he puts his life on hold for his athletes every day. |
