If you take Business classes, o
r have seen a new face in the hallway then you have probably seen or heard of Mrs. Haims. She teaches Personal Finance and Computer Applications. She teaches in a couple different classrooms but her office is located in room 12 on the first floor of the school.
She gets to know many different types of students because she teaches all four grades. Mrs. Haims and I met up during a free block to sit down and talk about her debut teaching at Victor.
I started off by asking her about her favorite part of teaching. So far she said the best part about teaching at Victor has been making connections with students and getting to know everybody.
Mrs. Haims has a different start to teaching then most teachers here. She first began working for different businesses in the marketing field, but then decided to have a career switch and go back to graduate school at SUNY Oswego to get her Master’s. The main reason she decided to make this switch was because she enjoys working with others in person and her other job was primarily from home. She also enjoys the freedom within teaching an elective here at Victor.
Mrs. Haims stated that the hardest part about teaching is making sure she is meeting all of her student’s needs and accommodations, staying on top of everything, and checking in on students’ home life.
When I asked Mrs. Haims the biggest difference between her high school experience and ours she said that students’ attire is definitely the biggest difference she sees. When she was in school she said everyone wore jeans and nice boots and tops every day whereas today most people wear sweatpants and sweatshirts as daily attire.
Mrs. Haims and her husband’s favorite activities include, skiing, going to the lake, having family dinners weekly with her big Italian family, she also spends a lot of her time with her husband and dog Dixie.
One piece of advice she would give to high schoolers is “enjoy the moments now because one day you are going to wish you could go back.”
