Fashion has been a beautiful study of art all throughout time. Fashion is a choice. A choice of whether to stand out or to blend in. Most of the time, places make it easier to dress to impress because everyone else around you is. For example New York City, a place where it is nearly impossible to stand out. A city where you get to play around with your look every single day, where you can be a new character. The fun outfits we spot from afar almost gives you the motivation to match that and try out different styles.
This ability to see the way others are dressing and take inspiration from them is such a beautiful way for us to come together, by simply playing dress up. More often than not when people think of fashion they think of fun outfits that appeal to the eye. But what if fashion is just confidence in clothing. What if the clothes really have nothing to do with this concept of fashion but rather how you wear the outfit. As you may have heard, are you wearing the outfit or is the outfit wearing you?
I wonder how to tell if something is really cool fashion. Is fashion just an overall opinion of something? Because if that’s the case this may be an extremely controversial topic. How do you know if what you’re wearing looks good or not? Often I get 4 different opinions when it comes to picking my outfit out (one of the reasons I don’t ask for help anymore). Because if your best friend loves the way that scarf looks but your sister hates it, what is the truth? The obvious choice is to wear what you want to wear and choose something that suits you.
But I don’t think it really is that easy. I suspect that 90% of the time the confidence you get is from other people. From the number of compliments, smiles, or stares you may get. How do you train your mind to not care about those opinions? If it is that easy, fashion is really just a societal opinion. Do you have to have experience in order to have a say in fashion? What if everyone wore whatever they wanted instead of what your friends wear. Would there be a higher sighting of fashion?
Would it mean something more than just a fun outfit? Perhaps a new and different form of art would be created throughout society. I fear we need to stop having a picture in our head when we think of the word fashion. The truth is fashion is what you make of it, what you believe shows the beauty of art.
One of the most beautiful things is seeing an outfit and having your first thought be “what in the world is that”. How inspiring is it that we can wear something completely out of the ordinary and be able to see the true art in it. More often than not we are so focused on what everyone else is wearing that we forget that it’s okay to be different.
It is okay to break these standards, how can someone tell you something looks bad when the other person thinks it looks good. The meaning of fashion is simply what you make of it, something that shows we are not only allowed to be different but encouraged to do so.
