A Runaway Victory

On Monday May 15, Brody Burgess won the Section V Individual Super Sectional title and punched his ticket to represent one of the nine other golfers from Section five at the State Tournament.

Just two days earlier Burgess won the Class AA Individual Sectional Title for the second year in a row, shooting an even par 71 at Clifton Springs Country Club.

Individual Sectionals takes the top 20 players and ties and moves them onto Super Sectionals which is the qualifier for the State Tournament.

Two other Victor golfers advanced to Super Sectionals; Jack Doran and Jacob Kulakowski. They both struggled on Monday and didn’t make it to the state tournament.

I had a chance to follow Kulakowski who started off hot making a 30 foot birdie putt on his opening hole. However after the hot start it was a struggle for Kulakowski, his driver betrayed him and had to punch out from the trees most of the day.

Jack Doran was coming off what he said was “the best I have ever struck the ball in a tournament” and he looked to continue that on Monday, he hit a solid drive on the first and then another good shot onto the green, but the theme of the day was putting as he couldn’t see to adjust to the fast greens.

Burgess played beautifully after a bogey on the first hole, he immediately bounced back with a birdie on the par five second and steadied from there. He shot a one over par 37 on the front and held a commanding lead over Owen Corby and Matt Carpentier.

After Brody’s Sectional win last year he fired an 80 in Super Sectionals, it was still good enough to make the state team but he was disappointed. I talked to Brody before the round and he said he learned from last year and was going to relax and play smart this time around.

On the back nine Brody caught fire making three birdies despite two bogeys. The back nine included him making two 20+ foot putts for birdie and scrambling beautifully. It felt like he was cruising to victory with the rest of the field struggling.

Brody went on to shoot even par 71 once again to finish first at Super Sectionals. Brody will look for a strong finish at the state tournament hoping to continue his great play.
