Annual Food Drive: A Group Effort

Annual+Food+Drive%3A+A+Group+Effort

Victor Senior High School’s Student Council plays a big role in planning, hosting, and successfully completing all of our schools events and fundraisers. The most recent event that our Student Council concluded was the annual Food Drive.

The Food Drive for the 2023-2024 school year occurred from December 8th through December 22nd, where all grades were allowed to bring in their non-perishable foods to their 2BD classes!

To motivate classes to donate and bring in food they awarded the class with the most points to win a prize. These points included cereal, peanut butter, and granola bars being worth 3 points. Mac and cheese, soups, canned fruits, and veggies worth 2 points, and anything else adding up to 1 point.

As most of us know, or if you didn´t know, Mrs. Westbrook and Mr. Aldrich are the advisors of the Student Council.

“I would love to see a lot  of students donate…it would be great to be able to serve a lot of families like we´ve been able to do in the past,” Mrs. Westbrook exclaimed as I sat down with her in the Library.

The Food Drive has a long process. It all starts with the bell ringing in order to raise money and fund the school’s Food Drive. Part of that money raised is used to purchase the rice and potatoes or turkey and ham which at least one will be included in the families box. Then the food service and counseling department identifies the families who are in need in our district from Kindergarten to Seniors. The food is then collected from all buildings and sorted out by Student Council and volunteers. Ending the Food Drive all seniors who wish to participate drive and deliver the food to the families in need.

Partnerships included in the Food Drive are Salvation Army, Girl Scout Troop, Tops, and Food Market.

¨It means a lot because it´s a way to give back to our community, our community that supports us so much¨.

The hard working Kayleigh Bristow plays a very important role in our school’s student council. She has been a part of Student Council since freshman year, now she will be finishing her senior year at Victor Senior High School in only five months. Kayleigh plays an important part in all of our school events like the talent show, homecoming, and the food drive as ExecutivePresident for Council.

¨I have made posters for the Food Drive and have been marketing it to students in classes..I am running the driver part which involves the seniors to drop off the food and deliver it to the house¨.

Student Council plays a big part in Kayleigh’s school life and she takes a lot of time and responsibility for these events at Victor.

Although we were still fortunate enough to help and donate to over 100 families this holiday, Mrs. Westbrook and the Student Council were disappointed with the lack of donations provided by the High School itself. The High School donated less than it did last year which was disappointing for our School. There could be numerous reasons why the amount of food donated this year was decreased but next year the Student Council is hopeful that our school can come back with even better donations next year!
