The album Currents is Kevin Parker’s (A.K.A. Tame Impala) fourth studio album which dropped July 17, 2015 and has metaphorically fed families for years ever since that date. Currents is a self produced psychedelic pop album with 13 tracks of pure enlightenment. This album is mainly about moving on, becoming a brand new person, and the concept of change. These themes are mainly interpreted with the passing of time and the coming of age. The reason we got this album is because Kevin was recovering from a recent breakup and poured his feelings into this masterpiece of an album. In this review, I will be telling the meaning behind most songs and giving my opinion.
Track 1: Let it Happen – This track I feel is a perfect intro to the album and gives you a taste of what the whole thing sounds like. This track is about embracing fate and whatever happens happens.
Track 2: Nangs – A short and sweet interlude, repeating the same 7 words in question form but never disappoints.
Track 3: The Moment – This song is probably my third favorite song on the album. It is a catchy and upbeat song about living in the moment and not worrying about the past or future. Kevin talks about wondering and worrying about the future, and how it’s always coming, but he is reasoning with himself about how he isn’t ready but never will be, and whatever happens happens.
Track 4: Yes I’m Changing – This song is about how he has matured since the breakup and how he has allowed the future to just happen, perfectly fitting into the theme of the album.
Track 5: Eventually – A stunning song that tells a story about Kevin holding on to the past and attempting to move on, however he just cannot, and he is yearning to let go and “eventually” move on.
Track 6: Gossip – A very short instrumental interlude
Track 7: The Less I Know the Better – A very good song, loved by almost all, one of the most popular songs on the album. This song is about the grasp of ignorance and trying to hold on, but knowing that it’s the wrong thing to do. It ends by confronting the problem in his life, moving on from his denial.
Track 8: Past Life – This song is about trying to grasp onto the past after having moved on, as if the past were a past life.
Track 9: Disciples – A short song about Kevin’s regrets after his breakup that led up to this album.
Track 10: ‘Cause I’m a Man – A song about Kevin reasoning and reassuring himself about his mistakes he made. The production on this song is very similar to The Less I Know The Better with the guitar, and it is my 5th favorite on the album.
Track 11: Reality in Motion – My personal favorite; a catchy, upbeat, rhythmic song that has pretty much always been my favorite on the album. This song dives into the passing of time and how you cannot and should not hold onto the present, and fighting an emotional war with himself over time and it’s passing, all while having some of the most beautiful production and vocals I have ever heard.
Track 12: Love/Paranoia – This is my second favorite song on the album because I absolutely love the production on this song. This is a song about what the title says, paranoia intertwined in love. This song goes into how Kevin felt while in his relationship and how he was pushing his real feelings down inside while acting fine on the outside.
Track 13: New Person, Same Old Mistakes – A beautiful outro to the album which is one of the most popular songs on it. This song is about his past resurfacing and he can’t stop with his old habits, but he perseveres through it and changes into a better person. But later in the song, he starts to question if changing was the right thing to do and it ends off the album with him questioning himself.

I personally think that this album is a strong 9.5 out of 10. It tells a clear story yet contains a deeper meaning than what’s to grasp your first time listening, all while having some of the most beautiful production in the history of music. I would recommend listening to his album Innerspeaker before listening to Currents if you haven’t gotten into Kevin yet. Even if you don’t like to listen to full albums at a time, or don’t listen to music for meaning or lyrics, I would strongly recommend sitting down and listening to this album from start to finish.
