The Album, Hearts Sold Separately is an R&B album that navigates the emotional journey of the hardships of what its like to be in and out of love.
This is Mariah the Scientists fourth studio album and charted No.1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums and sold around 36,000 units in its first week according to Luminate.(Found at Billboard.com)
The Album open up with “Sacrifice” a track that talks about the need and the longing for someone to save you from yourself, and why you need them back.
The second track is a a compilation of two interludes called “United Nations+1000 Ways to Die”. The first part of the United Nations spreads the message that as people we need to be united and come together to better the world, and the second part, 1000 Ways to Die speaks about being in love with someone who is wrong for you but you still yearn for them.
The third track “Eternal Flame” is about someone who was in a relationship but somehow keeps coming back to the same person as if they are an eternal flame.
The fourth track and the second single to come from Hearts Sold Separately is the song “Is It a Crime” featuring singer and song writer Kali Uchis. The message of the song calls out to all lover girls and boys who ever felt like loving someone is a crime, and Kali brings heart touching lyrics like “Some may say a girl shouldn’t lay her cards on the table, Well im a woman, im not a girl, Is that a crime in this cruel world?”.
The next track and the first single that has placed Mariah the Scientist in the public eye is “Burning Blue”. Released on May 5th of 2025 “Burning Blue” has become Mariah’s highest charting song reaching No.25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The song talks about putting full commitment in a relationship on certain terms with lyrics like “Long as your a true leader, then ill oblige, promise to please you.” With its soft and spoken tone and unique aesthetic that Mariah created, “Burning Blue” has become R&B’s Song of 2025.
The following track All I want+ In Pursuit, talks about a relationship coming to an end and reflecting on what she wanted while being in that relationship and trying to navigate this new chapter in her life.
The seventh track “More” talks through the perspective of someone who is fully healed from a relationship and is searching for something they can call their own and realizing that thing is themself.
Moving on to my personal favorite track called “Rainy Days”. This song talks about how things feel different now coming out of a relationship and looking back that she deserves more realizing the worth that she has as a person.
The next song “Like You Never” moves away from the calm and mellow beat and goes into a more alternative beat, with the Mariah asking the question, would you love me even if you didn’t trust me.
The Final song to close out the album is “No More Entertainers” The song talks about Mariah’s personal issues she had in the past with her lovers with saying “How we go from lovers to nothing” and “I don’t know this man, I dont know his friends . . . Tell me it dont have to end”.
Over all the Album Hearts Sold Separately talks about the struggles of being in love and whats its like to be out of love. Mariah the Scientist has used her experiences to reach out and resonate with others who feel the same pain as she did, and with that this is Heart Sold Seapretly.
