Be A Goldfish: Why Everyone Should Be Watching Ted Lasso
Winner of eleven Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and three SAG Awards, Ted Lasso is the TV Show you won’t want to miss. This Apple TV+ Original starring SNL’s Jason Sudeikis, along with actors such as Hanna Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Phil Dunster, will have you on the edge of your seat in ways you might not expect.
Ted Lasso is about the underdogs trying to beat the odds with their inexperienced coach, while also navigating their personal lives. While Ted Lasso is very comedic and provides many laughs, it also has some drama regarding players’ difficult personal lives, and romances. In addition, much of it, of course, revolves around soccer.
The show is about Kansas-native Ted Lasso (played by Jason Sudeikis) who comes to England to be the new coach of AFC Richmond, a professional soccer league. The only catch? Ted has only coached American football and doesn’t know the first thing about soccer. In addition the new manager of the team, Rebecca Welton (played by Hanna Waddingham), has her own motives for recruiting Ted. But with his happy go lucky personality and extreme kindness towards everyone, can Ted lead his team to victory?
Some non sports enthusiasts might try to skip this show but Ted Lasso is for everyone regardless of sports interests. This is not a show about just a sports team; Ted Lasso is about the players. Even if you don’t like or understand soccer, you will still find yourself rooting for AFC Richmond and for its likable and not so likable teammates.
Every player, coach, and manager has many layers to their personality and many reasons about why they are the way they are. As the episodes and seasons progress every character changes and develops for better or for worse and adds to the dynamic of the team.
Ted is a very positive, outgoing guy who can see the best in everyone even if they can’t see it in themselves. Even with no soccer experience, Ted still keeps his positive attitude in the face of defeat.
He believes that the best way for the team to win is to inspire them to believe in themselves and work together. Some of his inspirational sayings include ‘Believe’ and ‘Be a Goldfish’.
Jason Sudeikis expertly captures Ted’s compassion and innocence with perfect facial expressions and jokes delivered at just the right time. Sudeikis even helped to write some Emmy nominated episodes of the show and is an executive producer. He helped to bring Ted Lasso from a popular NBC Sports promo to a TV show and is a co-creator. Sudeikis’ character is kind to everyone even if they are not kind to him, and notices little things that make people happy, like bringing his boss biscuits that remind her of childhood.
Speaking of the boss, Rebecca is the headstrong new manager of the team. After her divorce she gains control of AFC Richmond and makes many changes (whether they are to the team’s benefit or not remains to be seen).
Players Roy Kent and Jamie Tartt are two of the best athletes on the team, but both suffer from attitude problems. Roy (played by Brett Goldstein), is the oldest player on the team and is oftentimes bitter and
angry, while Jamie (played by Phil Dunster) is very young and self absorbed. But even “unlikeable” characters like these have qualities that will have you rooting for them.
The scenes are skillfully filmed even though the cast is large. During the locker room scenes the cameras switch to show many different people’s facial expressions which helps you get to know all of the characters and not just the main ones.
During the soccer playing scenes the shots are filmed more cinematically and less like a traditional soccer game. Different angles are used to follow the soccer ball which makes it more interesting to watch than a typical soccer game. The game scenes are also kept short to keep you entertained.
Throughout the seasons, Ted works to bring everyone together and create a close team that can win. Ted Lasso is a very positive show about teamwork and believing in yourself. Everyone will love this show and it will have you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the next goal.
Seasons 1 and 2 can be seen on Apple TV+ and the show has been approved for season 3. The release date for the third season has not been announced yet.
