Shrinking is a heartwarming story about life, loss and moving on. It depicts a therapist named Jimmy(Jason Segal) who is grappling with the loss of his wife as he struggles to come to terms with reality and become  the father his daughter, Alice(Lukita Maxwell), needs.

Jimmy makes lots of mistakes but is learning to accept himself in spite of them. Throughout his process of coping, he reconnects with and leans on many people, including his coworkers, Paul(Harrison Ford) and Gaby(Jessica Williams), and his neighbor Liz(Christa Miller).

Paul, who is dealing with some of his own life challenges, comes across as a little rough around the edges, but is actually very caring and supportive of Jimmy and his daughter as they try to move forward with their lives. Gaby and Liz also play supportive roles as they encourage Jimmy to reconnect with Alice and reclaim his role as her father. They force Jimmy to reevaluate his life and start to pick up the pieces again.

Another important person in Jimmy’s life is his new patient Sean(Luke Tennie), a veteran who sees Jimmy as part of his court-mandated therapy. Viewers quickly discover that while Jimmy uses unconventional methods to help Sean process his trauma, Sean takes on the role of an unconventional patient who helps Jimmy process his struggles too.

In addition to playing a lead role in Shrinking, Jason Segal is also a co-creator along with Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, who is also the executive producer of Ted Lasso. Together they bring a similar comedic relief paired with life struggles and heart to the series.

Jason Segal, known for his roles in How I Met Your Mother, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and more recently, Windfall, brings lots of humor and compassion to his character, in what could be his best performance since Freaks and Geeks.

Overall, Shrinking is a funny, moving, and heart-warming show that dives into the emotions of everyday people and explores how everyone copes in their own ways. After the first episode, you are reminded that even the people who you think have their life “figured out” really don’t.
