As many of you know, the Victor Senior High art wing is lined with an array of stunning artistic murals that capture the attention of everyone who passes by. But have you ever wondered how these incredible pieces of art come to be? Who is behind it? And why?
This cherished school tradition began in 2005 and eventually expanded into the following years. Each year, our fellow seniors who are enrolled in AP art are given the unique opportunity to leave a long-lasting legacy and mark on the school by designing, customizing, and painting a mural to go in our art wing, with some in the music wing as well.
Mr. Denner, the AP art teacher, explains the effect the artwork makes, not only on him, but everyone in the school: “The murals in the art wing create an environment where creative people come together, reflecting a more creative space.”
These vibrant and colorful pieces express a lively emotion throughout the basement.
Yet there are many eye-catching pieces. The two that greatly impact Denner at every glance are the Andy Warhol mural and the larger murals, for example, the mural with two people having a conversation through a thought bubble. These two murals truly pull you into the story and environment that is created.
Many students have conveyed that other floors in the school feel very bland, almost like a jail in comparison. The liveliness in the art wing portrays the rest of the school as dull. Art seen throughout other schools allows for a lot of character and beautification to arise.
As of today, a wide variety of murals remain in the art wing basement area but not upstairs. Why is that? Well, Mr. Denner explains that “the process of getting a mural approved is somewhat of a complicated one. It has to go through several different steps. Here in the art wing, though, we have a lot more freedom because it’s left to the discretion of the art teachers.”
The music club has been discussing potentially adding artwork in the music wing hallway, as well as throughout the other bland stairwells in the school. This could be the start of more art murals ascending upwards to further floors.
With hope in the future, more of our school walls will be covered in the bright liveliness that was born in the art wing, allowing us to showcase our art character throughout the building rather than hidden away in the basement. If you come to visit in a couple of years, art murals will have multiplied with new unique pieces, with the possibility of new locations.

I’m so glad that you wrote an article on this! I’ve always wondered who got to paint the murals, and since I am taking AP Portfolio this year I was really happy to learn that I’ll get to work on one at the end of this year too. You have a great writing style and I like how you introduced the article with questions. Your choice of title is awesome as well, I’m so glad you decided to feature the art wing in your article!

I really enjoy your word choice and the structure of this article. I think its very interesting how you left it open ended in how the art could expand in the coming years, definitely something to look forward to! Reading this leaves me very inspired to start thinking about my own mural piece to come! Good job Aubs!

I love walking through that hallway. It’s so special that we, as students, have the opportunity to create a mural. Your article is so well put, and I love that you highlight these murals that mean so much to the art wing. My favorite mural is the Stary Stary Night mural.

I love this topic! For a long time I’ve wanted more murals throughout the school. I always love seeing art students work on them as I walk through the halls. Thank you for this interesting perspective – I hope we’ll see more murals in the future!
