We all know Mr. Siesto, Dr. Terranova, and so much more of the faculty at Victor Senior High School – but what about the people who work behind the scenes to keep the school running? Meet Joan Randall.
Mother of four, Temple University alum, former guidance counseling – this woman can do it all. Mrs. Randall is the building secretary at Victor Senior High School, who has done more than some people would think. Starting at Victor back in 2007, Mrs. Randall has witnessed and experienced so much while being both a counseling secretary and secretary to Mr. Siesto. So much has changed in these past eighteen years and there are some things that Mrs. Randall misses from her earlier years here at Victor.

She said, thinking back on earlier years, “We have a lot of traditions here – although, I would like to bring back float building for homecoming.”
Homecoming, a widely adored and highly anticipated event for Victor, already has a multitude of activities it offers to students. Float building hasn’t been around in Victor for upwards of ten years; I say that is far too long without it. Personally, I would trade all of the other events if it meant we could get float building back.
I also talked to Mrs. Randall about her work environment and how it does or does not work for her. She told me about the people that cycle in and out of Victor’s faculty and how staff is replaced so quickly, specifically the assistant principals (twelve total during her experience!). She even mentioned that she met her best friend while working in the counseling department but they ultimately had to go their separate ways. She says in a sorrowful tone, “I met my best friend in counseling but she retired… it’s sad how people move on, especially to new careers. I miss their personalities.”

Imagine that – working with someone whom you’ve grown to know and love, then they just leave. Despite the ever-changing rotation, Mrs. Randall always manages to treat students with respect, honesty, and an undeniable wit. Some would even say her most admirable trait is her sarcastic sense of humor, and I would have to agree. With all of the responsibilities she has to uphold – such as completing attendance for the staff, setting up appointments for Mr. Siesto, and arranging the morning announcements – she has a lot on her plate, but never lets the work get to her.
After my conversation with Mrs. Randall, it became apparent that she does a great deal of work that may go unnoticed. Her work ethic and bright personality make our school a better place and everyone should recognize the things she does. So next time you’re in the main office, say hello or give a quick thank you to show that you appreciate her.
